CEU Review Process FAQs

Questions

Exactly what does the CEU process look like?

CEU Review Subcommittee will:
a. Review the training agenda within 5 business days.
b. Convert the chapter CEU request into evaluation results and/or
make recommendations to the chapter to maximize the CEU award.
c. Forward results and/or recommendations to the chapter/individual and NCMS
National Office. The National Office will then file the training agenda with the
completed CEU evaluation. (See CEU calculation Process)

To whom should the CEU request be sent to?

The NCMS National Office at kyle@mmco1.com or through the CEU page of the website and click on the email link at the top of the page.

Who can award CEU credit?

Chapter Chairs may issue one-half to two CEUs (a maximum of two) for a chapter meeting,
which includes one to two 45-60-minute (minimum) training sessions with a training topic that is
relevant to industrial security, industrial security management or information security. (See
the business card template for instructions and sample attendance certificate). If the
chapter chair is not sure if the training qualifies for CEU credit, he/she may request
clarification from the CEU Review Subcommittee (CRS) Chair.
All other education and training (i.e., workshops, training days, mini-seminars, seminars,
conferences, schooling and courses etc.) requests for CEU credit will follow the
formal subcommittee process with the CEU Review Subcommittee awarding CEU
Credit.
In addition, the ISP® Committee Co-Chairs may also issue CEU credit.

What should the request format be?

Subject line should say Chapter’s/Individual’s Name CEU Review Request. An
agenda is preferred rather than a worded request and Word format is requested to allow the
CEU Review Subcommittee to annotate CEU credit within the agenda.

What elements are needed on the CEU request form?

Individual’s/chapter’s name and point of contact’s name/contact info, date of the event, location,
breakout of the allotted amount of time spent on each course/lesson/presentation/program
(agenda) and a thorough description of the topic as it relates to industrial security, industrial
security management or information security etc. Label the event, whether it is a two- or three-
day seminar, educational program, chapter training, security day, workshop etc.

Is it mandatory to send in a request in order to get CEU credit at recertification?

No, however, it is much easier to determine the credit and faster to award the
recertification if the individual has the CEU preapproved for every event etc.

At recertification, what documentation does the candidate need to substantiate the CEU credit?

Attendance records, agendas and training descriptions/synopsis. Attendance records
should have name, topic, date, CEUs awarded. Chapters are encouraged to use business
card format attendance records or an attendance template of their own, provided all the
appropriate information is included, when they have chapter training for one- to two-hour
training/presentation sessions. A full-page attendance record/listing is at the chapter’s
discretion. The business card format may be easier for the chapter meetings.

What is the turnaround time when a request is sent in?

Five business days.

How far in advance should the agenda be sent in to ensure adequate time for feedback?

30 days to allow adequate review and recommendation/editing time. Any less risks not
receiving the CEU determination prior to the event. Individuals who send in their request
after the event run the risk of not getting full CEU credit.

What do I do if I disagree with the CEUs given?

With the 30 days’ advance submission, you can have adequate time to send your
concerns/questions to the CEU Review Subcommittee Chair or the National Office upon
receipt of your initial evaluation from the committee. The National Office will
then contact the CEU Review Subcommittee for further review and determination. If there is
still disagreement the ISP® Committee co-chair(s) will get involved.

What if I do not get a response to the request prior to the event?

If you are getting very close to the event, resend the request to the National Office. If the
event passes before the CEU award response is received, the CEUs awarded will still
count for your recertification.

If the speaker’s presentation is longer than what was originally planned/scheduled, can we get extra CEU credit?

No, as the original agenda is approved for CEU credit, that is the credit each ISP® will
receive even if the speaker runs over the allotted time OR if he or she falls a little short of the
planned or allotted time.

If the presentations are a little shorter than the mandated 45 minutes or whatever time the CEU credit was based on, do we still get the CEU credit that was initially approved?

Yes, the ISP®s still receive the approved credit. However, if the presentation or training does not
happen or the amount of time is substantially less than the 45 minutes required, the CEUs are not creditable. This is where ISP® ethics come into play.

Can we receive CEU credit for a contractor’s product presentation or selling pitch?

No. While there may seem to be training happening, this this is a product sell situation, not
industrial security training/education per se. Even working/receiving instruction
on the contractor’s equipment /software is not creditable.

How do the SMEs and Mentors document their roles in the EPP program for CEU/
credit awards?

For recertification, the SME/Mentor will need a report with the date and time, topic, and
if the SME/Mentor was the lead or in an assistant role. It should be submitted with the
rest of the information validating 60 CEU credits.

Can I get CEU credit for a quiz, exam, or a practicum?

No, not for a quiz or an exam. Yes, they reinforce the learning but credit for both the training
and the exam/test is not allowed. A practicum on the other hand DOES receive credit; however, it must be a true practicum as opposed to the above. A practicum is designed to give students supervised practical application of previously studied theory. It is an exciting learning opportunity that affords learners the chance to observe and participate in diverse educational settings and to apply the theories and concepts learned in the program course work.
By the end of a practicum each student will have accomplished the following:

  • Successful mastery of specific course objectives as they align to professional
    standards.
  • A demonstration of learning
Significant professional growth in knowledge, skills, and dispositions.

Said a little differently, a practicum is under instructor guidance and presentations are
usually done to confirm the learning and then to receive feedback from the instructor and
group. In essence it is a total learning environment– using the tell me, show me, do it
style phase training. It is actually an extension of the classroom session and through a thorough knowledge of the facts demonstrates a deep comprehension as witnessed through a demonstrated application.

If I attend a non-NCMS event and the certificate documents “X” amount of training hours, does that equate to CEU credit?

No, the agenda with all the required information must be submitted to the NCMS CEU Review
Subcommittee for evaluation.

If I only have a general statement about the training and the total amount of hours, is that enough to receive CEU credit?

No. You must submit a detailed agenda that outlines the schedule for the day(s) and the training
that is offered. If you do not have one of these, it is recommended you ask the instructor to
supply these details for you; otherwise, you risk receiving no credit for this training.

May I call the CEU Subcommittee Chair to discuss CEUs prior to an event or after if I have questions?

Yes.

If I have to consecutive 45-minute training sessions that cover separate topics, will I
earn two CEUs?

Yes, as long as they are two separate sessions. One 90-minute session will earn 1.5 CEUs.

Can I contact the CEU Subcommittee Chair and ask for history on what my chapter
has done regarding CEU in the past?

No. It is the responsibility of the ISP® to keep track of their own CEUs. Any questions should be
directed to the chapter chair.

Do I earn CEUs for NCMSLive webinars?

Yes. The number of minutes attended is included on the certificate, which must be submitted
with your recertification application. If you attend 45-60 minutes, you will earn one CEU.

Do I earn any CEU credit for posting/interacting on the NCMS HUB?

No.

Do I earn CEU credit for a contribution to the ISP® Insights newsletter?

No. However, you do earn CEU for publications such as the NCMS Bulletin. If you have any
doubts about what will be included, please contact the CEU Subcommittee Chair or the NCMS
National office (see question #2 above).

In the Recertification Credit Guide, there is an “other” category. What can I include
here for possible CEU credit?

Contact the CEU Subcommittee Chair.

I am required to take specific courses to keep my security job at my company – can I earn CEU credit for these?

It depends. As long as it is related to industrial/information security, it can be eligible for credit
depending on the time invested. Contact the CEU Subcommittee Chair for guidance.
